SMEX - Lebanon

About the organization

Social Media Exchange (SMEX) aims to empower people and expand possibility by promoting the strategic use of new media in a variety of contexts, including self-expression, advocacy, civic participation, journalism, and entrepreneurship. Our theory of change integrates the design and delivery of meaningful informal learning opportunities with relentless support for digital and human rights. While our principles and standards are global, Lebanon is our home, making Arab society and culture our primary context for action.

Our approach encompasses:

Social media training. SMEX offers online and on-site workshops and courses for citizens who want to learn to use digital and social media strategically to reach their goals, while maintaining their online privacy and security. In addition, we curate and produce Arabic-language new media guides and resources.

Developing a media empowerment community of practice. We aim to help localize Arab media empowerment by encouraging exchange of learning resources, opportunities, best practices, and lessons learned among media trainers and coaches to establish training norms as well as to extend opportunities beyond the big cities.

Supporting Arab Internet watchdogs and campaigns. We’re joining with others across the region to convene and mobilize a regional constituency to advocate for constructive, user-centered Internet laws and policies—and to defend against legislation that threatens human rights and freedoms.

We are a registered Lebanese nonprofit association and maintain small offices in Beirut, Lebanon, and Washington, D.C., but work mostly as a distributed organization, with contributors across the region and beyond
